Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, the dancehall star said Nigerians celebrate success more openly, while Ghanaian entertainers often earn very little from their craft.
According to him, there was a time in his career when he was already one of Ghana’s biggest music stars but still faced financial hardship.
“Nigerians appreciate success, Ghana doesn’t appreciate success. As a star, I was sleeping on the street as big as I am. At one point, my girlfriend who was living with her parents was the one accommodating me.
“Even as a big Ghanaian artist, back then, I took taxis to shows. Not just me, a lot of Ghanaian artists do that. Ghanaian artists earn pennies, while their Nigerian counterparts earn big.”
Shatta Wale urged entertainers in Ghana to learn from the Nigerian music industry by setting higher standards and demanding better value for their work, insisting that greater appreciation for success would help improve the fortunes of artists in the country.
